Review: Ace of Spades
Nah cuz I sat down to write this review, right after I finished the book and then I forgot about it because I was sleepy and then real life things happened and I completely forgot about it. LMAOOO I don't know how I'm gonna work as a functioning adult in society.
When two Niveus Private Academy students, Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo, are selected to be part of the elite school’s senior class prefects, it looks like their year is off to an amazing start. After all, not only does it look great on college applications, but it officially puts each of them in the running for valedictorian, too.
Shortly after the announcement is made, though, someone who goes by Aces begins using anonymous text messages to reveal secrets about the two of them that turn their lives upside down and threaten every aspect of their carefully planned futures.
As Aces shows no sign of stopping, what seemed like a sick prank quickly turns into a dangerous game, with all the cards stacked against them. Can Devon and Chiamaka stop Aces before things become incredibly deadly?

WHAT DID I FEEL ABOUT THE BOOK'S:
1. Writing Quality: You know, after a very long time I actually managed to read a book with a writing style that actually has that X factor to draw me in. Like really, I've read a few books this year and none of them have been a five star yet. Close to four stars and above and never a five star. I mean, I've read my fair share of books, but it's sad to see that a majority of them don't have that oomph in them. Like WHERE IS THE OOMPH, gimme the oomph. But anyways the book really has that factor in the writing style. I mean, lord I am seriously unable to describe this anymore. It doesn't really drag, and is still descriptive enough to let you know what is happening.
2. Character Development: I have some words about it.
Chiamaka: I feel like she's the most realistic girlboss character that I have ever come across. During the beginning chapters, the beginning of her mind works like she's in a fucking chess game, which is fair enough, considering she's the only BIPOC person [other than Devon] in the school and you gotta be a fucking mastermind to stay on top of the food chain. But as the chapters progress her facade of the cool mastermind begins to fall apart as she has a lot of breakdowns and stuff and she begins to panic about her future plans being ruined and stuff. It does bring out a bit more humane side of her instead of just being a robot focused on school.
Devon: Even though Devon has an equal screen time as Chiamaka, I do not find him that interesting of a character. I don't know why really. He doesn't just seem to appeal to me. I mean, he's got plans and stuff and wants to lay low so that he doesn't get into any trouble because his ma cannot afford to cover up his blunders, but otherwise I cannot sympathize with Devon. Like I tried really hard to like his character and perhaps at a few points I did sympathize with him, but I couldn't really connect with him if you know what I mean. Otherwise he's a great character though. Although a bit to naīve to actually figure out where his best interests lie.
Jamie: I absolutely hated this dude. Well, he was supposed to be hated which does mean that the author did a great job but fucking hell. This dude is the walking definition of a red flag. He's a manipulative, lying, conniving piece of shit that really showed his true colours as soon as he was done using Chiamaka. Like for real though, I would have smacked his face if I could enter a book.
3. Couldn't put it down- Ness: 9/10 absolutely hands down. I really didn't think this book would be really that good.
4. Plot Twists: Plot twists weren't really a major factor in the beginning of the book? But they did get really good towards the end. I read somewhere, 'a good plot twist isn't proving your audience wrong, it's to make them realize all the clues they missed out'. I don't actually have the Tumblr post right now, nor do I remember what it said, but I do think it was along those lines. But my point is that the plot twists towards the end got really good. I wasn't really expecting those outcomes, but now that I think about it, the author had laid clues every fucking where regarding where it would lead up to.
5. Plot: As for the plot, it completely gave me 'One of Us is Next' and 'V for Vendetta' vibes. Like seriously, I was completely on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading the book. The plot also is really interesting, because I was hella drawn in to find out what dirty secrets Chiamaka and Devon were hiding. Though it is a teensy bit disappointing that those dirty secrets are pretty much touched and passed upon. They're explained, but not to the point where it would make sense. It also did kind of remind me a bit of 'Gossip Girl'? I haven't really watched Gossip Girl don't come after me.
