Review: Legendborn
I put Renegades aside for this. I fucking put RENEGADES aside, for this book. This book was a part of the buddy read in my book club so I moved Renegades back, and now Caraval has come in between, so Renegades will be the last read of this month. I think, no idea though. But yeah, anyways.
Three years after the death of her mother, Bree Matthews ends up at E.C in Carolina to be able to go to college and follow her dreams, and live a normal life. But that all shatters to dust when one party night goes awry. Suddenly Bree is thrust into the world of magic and legends, and into the history of Arthur and the Order of Merlin. Her power seems to have awakened and there are people who would stop at nothing to get her out of the way. Everything's confused and her circumstances seem to pull her apart into two, and all Bree is left with is to choose where her loyalties lie in the upcoming war.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 3.8/5, BOY DO I HAVE OPINIONS.
WHAT DID I FEEL ABOUT THE BOOK'S:
1. Writing Quality: I do love the way the story is written, but there is a lot of information dump in the first unit and the greater half of the second. There are a lot of details that I think that could have been omitted when it came to the beginning because it was quite the hurdle to get through. Units one and two took me a whole of three days before I could approach units three and four. It is a sort of turn off for a book in my opinion, knowing that the book is good and yet fails to fulfill the purpose of a good exposition.
2. Character Development: Character development is definitely something that was amazing in this book. Because I love the way that the characters grow around one another and it's absolutely beautiful considering that it has been a good while since I saw some good character development. Greer being the neighbourhood enby rep with they/them pronouns, just mwah. But I do have my opinions over some dynamics.
Alice X Bree: Perfect, wonderful. This is how best friends should be. Always looking out for one another and helping even if they had their issues. And Alice helping Bree out is the most wholesome thing ever. I love it, awesome. Wish I had besties like that growing up.
Nick X Bree: Questionable. Fucking questionable. Like seriously, I do NOT see any chemistry arise between Nick and Bree. Fine, I get it Bree harbours a crush on Nick because he's handsome. We all do, when we're 16, we have no frickin judgement and no fricking standards and our hormones are all over the place. Understandable. But what is with their dynamic development? I do not understand that and it feels effing rushed. There is no bonding moment and there is no chemistry between them that makes their ship believable. And believe me, I am not the only one who thinks so.
Sel X Bree: Now this is a ship worth talking about. Even though Sel and Bree are not canonically together but their chemistry is like gasoline and fire. IMMEDIATE combustion. And the way Sel behaves around Bree is so fucking obvious that he is in love with Bree. My girl Bree is either blind or dumb if she cannot see how the morally grey man loves her. Perfect enemies to lovers in my opinion. And Sel calls her "cariad" which means "darling" in Welsh. I mean, I could go on and on and on showing instances from the book where Bree and Sel are wholly in love with one another and wholly in denial. This ship is one of those ships that will test both your patience and sanity. Book 2 better bring Sel and Bree together or else I will throw hands. And perhaps my laptop on the wall.
3. Couldn't put it down- Ness: I'll say a 6/10. As much as I liked the book and it really felt like it lived up to the Instagram hype, it left me a lot of questions and unsatisfactory opinions, so that's a downer.
4. Plot Twists: This is one of the things that I was very very very happy with. Plot twists. I mean, there were a hell lot of them, too many to count. And seriously, the plot twists in unit 4 were effing jaw dropping. My face was "are you serious right now" in a good way because good god I was hella shocked about it. Like man, let me breathe. It was hard to process with all these plot twists at once. Especially the last three chapters, yoooooooooooooooooo, that was something else entirely. Like bruh, what's with all the bombs dropping on me like that? I ain't ready yo 😭. Twas tough af on my soul.
7. Plot: I love how the book is based on the Arthurian legend, because let's be real, other than the movies and the Disney version, not a single book that I have come across in fiction that talks about Arthur and his Round Table. Like bro, that thing is an effing goldmine of history and y'all choose to ignore it. Also the fact that the end does follow the legend of Lancelot and Guinevere which makes things a little more interesting. And plus, magic, blood, hellhounds. Splendid. I do want the second book now.
