Review: A Thousand Steps Into Night

It's AAPI month as mentioned before but I haven't been going as quick  with my tbr as much as I'd like to be and I do not like this reading slump at all. I mean, there are so many wonderful books out there and I'm missing it all out just because of a fucking reading slump, which I fall into every other month. It's fricking frustrating.

In a world where spiritual beings live alongside humans, Miuko just had one job. She had to bring the teacups home from the potter. Who knew that in the process of defending a magpie from a couple of fox spirits would end up in her becoming the demon of death? A kiss on a lonely road one night was all it took for Miuko to leave everything behind and become a demon that she didn't even want to be. Now she has only a few days to return back to her original state before her inner demon takes over- with a handsome magpie spirit by her side and a demon scheming to thwart her plans, the task isn't easy.

QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 3.5/5, INTERESTING, BUT NOT ENOUGH I GUESS.

WHAT DID I FEEL ABOUT THE  BOOK'S:

1. Writing Quality: While the first unit is written really well, the second unit is a mess. Like it literally is a mess. The first unit flows very well and it's easier to connect the dots for me, while the second unit is just disappointing. The time travel element does make it better for a while but otherwise my head kept spinning trying to keep up with all the spirits and the names. Twas difficult for my ADHD brain. Like very, very difficult. Like learning French as a native English speaker difficult.

2. Character Development: I love Miuko's character development that happens here. She goes from this shy village girl to this strong headed person who is willing to do anything to save her friends and other people. The fact that she is dealing with both her human and demon sides, makes her come off as really mentally strong because if I was in her place, I would have let the demon take over, like bro, just get it over with already. She's just so fricking selfless bro, I would never do that. I'd just let everyone suffer if I was in her place, be evil, be petty. And it's sad to see her help go south just because she's a demon but she's just dying so that others can live. It's kind of sad to see her like this.

3. Couldn't put it down- Ness: 5/10. While I finished the first unit in pretty much 2 days, getting through the second unit was a PAIN. Like literal pain on the mind. It took me like the rest of the week to finally get through it.

4. Plot Twists: I absolutely LOVED the plot twists. One good thing about the second unit was the fricking plot twists because I couldn't really predict what was actually happening. Well because the second unit was a mess that I couldn't really predict anything, but the plot twists were really kind of soothing for my mind. Like my mind went 'at least something good is happening now'. I kid you not, my brain audibly "whew"-ed at the sight of a plot twist. Brain loves plot twists you know.

5. Plot: The plot was hella engaging. Plus Goodreads actually ended up doing a very good job when it came to describing the book which was, I think very nicely put, unlike some books that have nice descriptions and end up being a waste of time later on [cough A Lie In Church cough]. Even though the second unit was a mess, it was fun to see the mythologies come together, even though they could have been done well. I do feel like the ending could have been cleaned up, because it just became one huge hotchpotch.

OVERALL, AN OKAY READ, there was space for more development in the story though.
