Review: Set On You
Fucking hell I am so behind on my reading schedule I can't even decide which book to read so that I can have my tbr in control or my schedule in control. I've read more books for other months, and I don't have a slump so why the actual fuck am I running behind on this schedule? I wanna sob.
Curvy fitness influencer Crystal Chen built her career shattering gym stereotypes and mostly ignoring the trolls. After her recent breakup, she has little stamina left for men, instead finding solace in the gym - her place of power and positivity.
Enter firefighter Scott Ritchie, the smug new gym patron who routinely steals her favorite squat rack. Sparks fly as these ultra-competitive foes battle for gym domination. But after a series of escalating jabs, the last thing they expect is to run into each other at their grandparents' engagement party.
In the lead up to their grandparents' wedding, Crystal discovers there's a soft heart under Scott's muscled exterior. Bonding over family, fitness, and cheesy pick-up lines, she just might have found her swolemate. But when a photo of them goes viral, savage internet trolls put their budding relationship to the ultimate test of strength.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4/5, BODY POSITIVITY AND ACTUALLY DEPICTING THE TRUTHS OF IT.
Possible Trigger Tags:
1. Mentions of eating disorders
2. Mentions of body dysmorphia [not to be confused with dysphoria]
3. Body shaming
3. Explicit scenes [basically smut]
WHAT DID I FEEL ABOUT THE BOOK'S:
1. Writing Quality: The writing quality is splendid. I love every part of it because it is so witty and humorous. None of the characters in the book are shown as stereotypes and it actually pleases me because seriously, I am so done with stereotypes. Like let a person breathe, if they do not fit into the category of normal it's abso-freaking-lutely fine. Also, who invented normal? Normal is a social construct and as long as you're not fucking with anyone's life, you're good. And WITTY BANTER. I cannot emphasize this enough about the witty banter that takes place. Witty banters are so important and it's so sad that only a few books have it. ADD MORE WITTY BANTERS IN FICTION!!
2. Character Development: Scott and Crystal's dynamic is hilarious. Both of them doing petty shit just to get under each other's skin? Love it. This is just the dynamic I want to have with my future S/O because it's just so adorable. Scott being a fireman kind of adds it to his hotness factor to be honest, if you know what I mean 👀👀👀. Crystal and Tara too, they have such a nice sibling relationship which kind of made me jealous because not all sibling relationships are like that. Or with your cousins. Sometimes, they're just set out to emotionally damage you forever. Anyways, coming down to my girl Crystal. GASLIGHT, GATEKEEP, GIRLBOSS. Pretty sure she's the type of person who'll say, "If you can't mansplain, manipulate, malewife your way out of this, manslaughter it is." And I love those type of women, they're simply the best. Like I ain't taking shit from you sir, even if you're a 6ft tall fireman with a rocking bod. Also the fact that Scottie falls in love with Crystal first. YES, THAT'S THE TROPE, THAT IS THE FRIGGING TROPE I LIVE FOR.
When he falls in love with her first 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖 >>> anything else.
3. Couldn't put it down- Ness: 9/10, the book's pretty funny if you want to give it a try.
4. Intellectual Depth: The image that this book projects is quite clear. Body positivity and loving yourself. I mean, I do understand this in a way because I have always been in an environment that will always look down on you no matter how you look. And it develops a hell lot of insecurities. I have never been known to take a lesson from a new adult book because most of the time they usually don't actually teach a lesson but this did seem to ingrain something inside my brain. It's not always possible to love yourself and it's really common and valid to have days when you're down and its absolutely fine, as long as you can pick yourself up. It doesn't have to be quick, it can take as long as you want, even if it takes years. It appealed a lot to my insecure ass and I think that's the image everyone should have of themselves. That they're worth it. And you're a wonderful person and ilysm.
5. Plot: As much as I enjoy the friendly enemies to friends to lovers plot, what kind of throws me off is their grandparents getting engaged. I mean, I do understand that that is the main plot point of the story, but doesn't it mean that they become extended relatives? Like grandkids, cousins sort of thingy? It's kind of strange and awkward to think of. I mean, I wouldn't want to fall for someone who's like my grandma's supposed betrothed's grandchild because that would make us siblings or cousins. It just throws me off you know. Kind of reminds me of "The Irregular At Magic High School" where the siblings fall in love with one another. Hate that shit, ew.
