I realized I needed to read a standalone because of two reasons. First, I was distracted af Second of all, I realized since both my physical tbr and E-book tbr [the main one] were both trilogies, it would take me quite some time before I would be able to update this blog perhaps, a few more weeks or so. And I feel like people would stop reading the blog if there aren't proper updates.
Rowan Roth knows one thing- Neil McNair is her biggest competition and nightmare. And the only thing that might give her satisfaction is the valedictorian title. But when Neil gets it, Rowan feels like her world is crashing, and that the senior scavenger hunt game might be the only thing remaining where she could prove herself. Rowan quickly finds out that a group of seniors is out to get them, and she has no choice but to team up with her biggest nightmare. And as time progresses, maybe Neil McNightmare, might not be a nightmare after all.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4/5, ACADEMIC LOVERS TO RIVALS WHERE GUY FALLS FIRST, I'M SOLD.
WHAT DID I FEEL ABOUT THE BOOK'S:
1. Writing Quality: The writing quality is really nice, like it's a nice Sunday evening that you're trying to enjoy. Wait, no, make that Saturday. I hate Sunday evenings cuz you gotta return to mundane life on Monday. Disgus-TANG. So yes, this book made me feel like a fine Saturday morning when I can wake up on my own and sit down to read. Haven't done that in 4 years though, fuck you CISCE and Gerry Arathoon, fuck you, respectfully. My point is, the writing's enjoyable.
2. Why did I like it so much: Simply because it's not emotionally shattering. Every once in a while I do enjoy a good book that's simply a normal romance and nothing too complicated. Just simply, events happening, people falling for one another or people simply realizing that they have been in love with one another. Sometimes simplicity is what you need in this forsaken world. Damn, I feel poetic today.
3. Character Development: I think this is one of the best part of the "academic rivals to lovers trope except I've loved you so much I hated you as a coping mechanism". And it's really beautiful to see Rowan come to the realization "wait, I could have fallen for this guy instead of fighting him all this time." Like guuuuurl, took you long enough. Kirby and Mara were so effing correct, Rowan was effing obsessed with Neil McNair without even realizing it. And NEIL, he's gonna be the book boyfriend I want to keep inside my pocket in chibi form because he do be so adorable. And that there are different sides to this sarcastically adorable character makes him even more adorable than normal. And for me normal level of adorable is Yamaguchi Tadashi from Haikyuu.
4. Couldn't put it down- Ness: 8/10. Until you count the times I had to get distracted by freaking Youtube, this book is pretty much a one read sitting that you can finish with a coffee by your side. It's really one of those books you'd like to enjoy on a rainy day when work/daily life is not fucking it up.
5. Plot: Academic rivals to lovers where guy falls in love with the girl first, or has been in love with the girl for the longest time is so beautiful. It's one of my most favourite tropes. And I think its one of the most beautiful tropes. Plus, "I have loved you for so long, I was willing to take the hate because that is all you were willing to give me". Just mwah. It gives me the butterflies. I missed this type of book.
OVERALL, A CUTE READ, definitely for one if they want a break from the angst stuff once in a while.
