Review: Daughter of The Pirate King Duology

I was wondering maybe I could make my reviews more serious-ish? Just so Edelweiss would take me seriously, ya know. Maybe they keep rejecting my requests for a review copy because they don't find me as important or as serious. I may be joking around in the blog but I do make sure I don't miss out the important points for the review. Maybe they should actually thoroughly read what is happening inside this blog instead of just looking at the cussing and all. At least I make my blogs youth worthy. And not make them sound like I'm some 50 year old. But wheeee, end of the March tbr and now we move on to the April tbr. And surprisingly now, it's the 1st of April now.

BOOK ONE: DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING

It took me a while to decide whether to start on this series or not. Whenever I start a series, I take a hell lot of time for me to blog about it and it sort of becomes useless considering I often forget stuff about the first book. My memory's not that bad but it ain't that sharp either.

Alosa is the daughter of the formidable pirate king, the only pirate who has been trained by him and the only female captain in his kingdom. And now she's on a mission. To find the piece of the map that has been hiding in the Night Farer, where she decides to get captured.  Clashing with the ship's handsome first mate Riden, Alosa must do all she can to get the missing map piece and prove that she is, the true daughter of the pirate king.

QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 3.2/5, I LOVE THE STORY BUT I FEEL LIKE THE STORY COULD HAVE EXPANDED A BIT.

WHAT DID I FEEL ABOUT THE  BOOK'S:

1. Writing Quality: The writing quality by far is quite simple and I quite like the way the story is like straight into the point, no dilly-dallying or "beating around the bush". Because this bitch right here is a no nonsense gal, ya hear me? So yeah, I really kind of am impressed by the fact as to how direct everything is, despite it being a fantasy novel. And that is one of those things that really drew me in. I do like the description but I  feel like there were glaring gaps in narration and hence not really that impressive.

2. Character Development: Alosa. Seriously, Alosa is one hell of a girlboss. She's the type of badass I aspire to be. Because she's dangerous, ruthless, violent, awesome [probably a bit of arsonist but that could be because of my arson tendencies] but seriously, I can understand why Riden seemed so smitten with her. Like god damn, what's better than a badass woman who won't take any bull from anyone and is willing to do anything, abso-freaking-lutely anything to get what she wants? Please, I want to marry this woman. Alosa please take me as your lawfully wedded gender [insert non binary term for husband/wife here] As I was saying, I really like how Alosa's character is actually created. Even Riden's character was really well written, considering how he turns from a ruthless first mate of a ship to whipped for Alosa. That's kind of cute. Other than that, there isn't quite the development because there aren't quite the characters mentioned.

3. Couldn't put it down- Ness: 5/10. I am conflicted about this book to be honest, there is nothing much to tell from here. I am a bit disappointed to say the least, despite me loving a lot of things about the book. It's kind of a downer considering how much I loved "The Shadows Between Us" but that is an invalid opinion considering this book came out around 2017 and TSBU in 2020.

4. Plot Twists: There isn't much plot twist either. Except for the fact that Theris was the actual Vordan. As I said, the story does go pretty straight with no nonsense winding around in it but there is a lack of plot twist in it as well. Not that I don't like it, but it particularly isn't my taste either. I might need a bit more than that for a pirate fantasy. A bit more I guess? It lacks an X factor.

5. Plot: I am highly and hugely disappointed at the turn of plots in this book. Because I feel like that the story could have expanded a bit more. Because there isn't really anything that I'd like to emphasize about. Like she wants to get the map, boom, she gets imprisoned. And I do feel like that this story could have gone more than it did. Like there could have been "something", because it's really hard to enjoy a story that way.

OVERALL, A MEH READ, I do feel like more content would be appreciated.

BOOK TWO: DAUGHTER OF THE SIREN QUEEN

First I thought maybe I'll blog first after reading the prequel and then I'll blog after reading this once again. Ya know, just to maintain the flow but you know I'm the dumbass. So I decided to get over this book AND then write the blog. Sheish. So much work.

After retrieving the third piece of the map from Vordan, Alosa has now come to know about the secret that her father has kept from her for days. Secrets that could tear apart at her very existence, proving that her life has been a lie upto that point. With her crew of 34, Alosa decides to step out into the unforgiving journey, towards Isle De La Canta, where she must prove that she is, the daughter of the Siren Queen.

QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4/5, MUCH, MUCH BETTER THAN THE PREQUEL.

WHAT DID I FEEL ABOUT THE  BOOK'S:

1. Writing Quality: The beginning does get a bit tedious when I see what happens because I feel like that there is a lot of information dump that happens. I do love the thrill and adrenaline that I feel that comes with it but the information dump is quite the goner in my opinion. Much like it's prequel, this book also follows the no nonsense strategy and that is, in fact quite nice if I may say so. Even the writing vibe changes quite a bit because you can feel the adrenaline in the whole book and I love that about it.

2. Image/ Illustration Quality: I never thought I'd live to see a day where a 2010s novel will be described by me at this point. But then again, we survived through a pandemic so anything can happen. At this point I won't even be surprised if an alien invasion happens. Though I think it would be awesome. N E ways, as I was saying. There isn't much illustration done but the fight scenes that have been described right towards the end of the book are godly. It may sound stereotypical but it was actually as if I was seeing the fight unfold in front of my eyes. Maybe it could be for my love of movies but I could see the fight happening. Ah nothing like a good ol' pirate fantasy with awesome fight scenes.

3. Character Development: Unlike the first book, character development with the main characters is a bit off. Maybe because they developed so much in the first book that there was no room in the second book. Kearan though, he's the adorable oaf whose development I cannot help but fawn over. He turns from a drunkard guard at the Night Farer to the navigator of the Ava-Lee and that's something to be really proud of. I kind of find Kearan to be my own baby whom I want to protect because he's so wholesome most of the time. Put him in my pocket.

4. Couldn't put it down- Ness: 7/10. Seriously, much better than the first book. Like very very very very very very very much better. Kind of a relief from the first book.

5. Plot Twists: There aren't any plot twists here either. Other than the hugeass secret that Alosa's father has been keeping from her for years. And also that her father had kept her siren mother trapped with him as long as Alosa has been alive. That was the good part of the plot twist. Because let's be real, we all knew that Alosa was the daughter of the siren queen. That was mentioned pretty much in the early stages of the first book. We been knew Alosa, we been knew.

6. Plot: I can't possibly explain in words how freaking glad I am to have reached this point because that means this blog has reached its end and I am sobbing because I have been trying for six effing hours for this blog. Like seriously, my computer kept crashing an infinite number of times until I had to delete and download a lot of stuff which in turn made me use up a hell load of my data. And data is expensive af yo. My point is, the plot is very much better than the first book because it feels like that the whole plot of the duology was so concentrated on this book that the first book felt dry af.

OVERALL, A NICE READ, much better.

OVERALL RATING: 3.6/5
