Review: Two Can Keep A Secret
So, I keep thinking that blogger should have a thrice damned dark mode. Because it's so fucking hard to write this blog in light mode because it fucking hurts my eyes. God I need a dark mode for blogger because god damn my eyes have become worse ever since I began blogging. Man, google, a dark mode for blogger please? Because you guys have a dark mode for almost everything.
After their mother crashed into a jewellery store after being high on opoids, Ellery and Ezra Concoran have been forced to live with their grandmother in Echo Ridge. But Echo Ridge has had a dark history, it was the place where Ellery's aunt Sarah went missing and a few years later the homecoming queen Lacey Kidluff was murdered. Now when threats are rising all over Echo Ridge and now that Ellery is also a nominee for homecoming queen, it feels like history might as well repeat itself for the third time once more.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 3.7/5, KIND OF DISAPPOINTING, LACKS PROPER CONTENT I GUESS.
WHAT DID I FEEL ABOUT THE BOOK'S:
1. Writing Quality: As I have mentioned before, I really enjoy Karen McManus's writing style because despite having information dumped in the first chapter, you know that there's always more to the story than is actual happening. And that's what I adore the most about Manus's novels. That's the best thing about this. But this book did feel like weak-ish compared to the others that I have read. Like when I was reading the book, I didn't feel like I was reading a McManus novel. Maybe that's my mistake, considering I had really high expectations with all of the novels that I was planning to binge. So this book did seem more of a downer in the beginning. Like content wise, it wasn't as interesting as the other novels. I know I shouldn't compare it to other novels but my mind is automatically doing so after being disappointed. It's normal to compare the books of the same author, right?
2. Character Development: Character development is here too is considerably not that well done in my opinion and certainly not until like the last hundred pages of the book. I really didn't seem to connect with the characters other than random moments when Mia and Ezra were being highly relatable. Kind of feel like they had more character development than Ellery did. Malcolm's development was kind of understandable to a point. To a point! Declan and Daisy had better developments. And don't make me start about Katrin's mean girl squad. Seriously. Ezra's line "I think they wear pink on Wednesdays" was the most iconic line I've ever come across. Seriously Ezra, even though he was not the main character is one of the rainbow ricecake community and I love him for that reason alone.
3. Couldn't put it down- Ness: 6/10, really, really really disappointed. DISAPPOINTED AF. I had to put this book at least FOUR TIMES. YE HEAR ME? FOUR TIMES!!! FOUR EFFING TIMES. UGH. Man I don't even wanna explain why I put it on a six anymore. You know what? I don't actually owe an explanation to my rating, I explain every other factor in the novel.
4. Plot Twists: McManus is the queen of plot twists. I am NOT AT ALL disappointed in this area because right up till the last 50 pages of the book, BOOM, a plot twist. Like I keep thinking that dang, now I gotchu, plot. And then plot's like, hold my macchiato. Man, now I want a macchiato. Been a while since I had anything other than black coffee. I'd kill for a good latte right now. Maybe a frappe but not a fan of frappes. Besides local baristas can't make a good frappe for the life of them. Anyways, my point is that, there's a freaking plot twist right at the end of the novel. Like bruh Karen M. McManus doesn't even leave out the bloody epilogue. The last line sent literal chills down my body. Like fuck, did you really have to do this to me? Literally so damn unfair.
5. Plot: Tis one of the better portions of the novel. I really like how the plot plays out and you actually never know what is happening. So that's actually a plus point. Plus the legacy of dead homecoming queens is quite the stirrer.
Kinda wish I had more to say about this blog.
