Review: Only A Monster
This is the third review that I am writing consecutively. Wait, no, make that fourth. Because two books were part of a series so they are included in the same blog. Yeah, so that makes four. I'm already literally overwhelmed right now and I feel like it was a mistake not blogging after reading. But oh well, I scored a lot of points in that week so no regrets. This is the last review I'll write today.
Only A Monster by Vanessa Len, (I kept misspelling her name for an unknown reason) is the story of Joan, who is half human and half monster. Spending her summer in London with her maternal side of the family, she goes on a date with Nick, the guy she likes, only to find that he's the hero destined to wipe out monsters from existence. After he's killed her family and Olivers, their rivals, she decides to go with Aaron, the last survivor of Olivers to reverse time, just to save her family.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 5/5, TEARS, TEARS, A RIVER OF TEARS.
I'm partly willing to put that this is a river of my tears meme but I shall refrain from doing so because I'm a disciplined human being.
And also because I couldn't find it.
PROS:
1. Originality: In the words of the greatest Roselia Black, "Originality is a social construct". But seriously, I love it here. The concept of the monster being a hero and the hero being the villain is top tier genius. Reversal of roles yes, I had forgotten the term for a moment and I might need to edit this point later but oh well, who the fuck cares? I'm fresh out of fucks to give.
2. Characterization: PLEASE, take my non existent credit card. Also non existent debt collectors, please don't sell my possessions away, this laptop is all I have to write this blog because the mobile version sucks ass. Like seriously, mobile blogger version, go suck a dick or something and see if you get better. Anyways, my point is that, I love the characterization. They may seem sort of stereotypical in the beginning, which I will not lie is really adorable but as the story unfolds, it seems like a new layer is added on to each of the characters which is really interesting.
3. THE ENDING BROKE ME. AS MUCH AS I PREFER A DIFFERENT ENDING, IT BROKE ME, LIKE BRUH WHY DO YOU GOTTA DO ME LIKE THAT?
4. Tension: Bruh I could cut it with a knife if I wanted to and still fail because it's so damn thick. Like seriously, where did all that tension come from? Did you see it coming? Because I sure as hell did not see it coming.
5. Plot twists: I almost wrote it as plot twits, but no I did not see it coming. Like damn, so unpredictable.
CONS:
1. I'm kind of sort of disappointed at the lack of romantic development between Aaron and Joan. Like there was enough sexual tension and then like a dumbass Joan chooses Nick to love him. Like girl, he murdered your fam. I'd go batshit feral on the guy who killed my fam, doesn't matter if he's the guy or not.
