Review: The Girl Who Fell Beneath The Sea

The sheer amount of times I'm dreading to touch this blog because of the sheer amount of books that I'm lagging behind. I'm resisting the urge to touch any new books and just reading manga to avoid lagging behind more and more. Sigh, when I wanted to read,  I hit a slump and now when I don't want to read, I'm reading.

The Girl Who Fell Beneath The Sea by Axie Oh is a new take on the old legend of the Sea God's bride. Mina has no business being by the seaside, but when she sees her brother looking longingly at his beloved, who is about to be sacrificed to the sea god to stop the storms invading her village, she decides to sacrifice herself in her place. Hoping to appease the sea God, she comes down to the spirit realm, hoping to be able to save her village, but the Sea God is sleeping. A mortal cannot stay in the spirit realm for long and it seems like there are people who'd rather the Sea God be asleep.

QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4.6/5, A VERY INTERESTING TAKE.

WHAT DID I FEEL ABOUT THE  BOOK'S:

Personally, I am freaking the shit out of writing in a new format but I was kind of running out of shit to write and I think this could be a new way of writing the blog, just to give it that more bookish look. And maybe Edelweiss might take me seriously for once.

1. Writing Quality: So, this is the first quality that I decided to stumble upon for no goddamn reason and it could have been another point but this bitch needs drama in his life. Seriously, too much studies and lack of drama is killing the fuck outta me. This point is literally the same as all other points. I really love the mysterious vibe the first page brings? I read XOXO and I think Axie Oh did a much better job with this book because it's MWAH.

2. Image/ Illustration Quality: So, I don't think this would be required as a separate point? I just wanted to see if there's anything I could write about it. The image/illustration quality I think is more suited to graphic novels and comics? I actually hadn't realized that before writing this point. So we can take note of this and not make this mistake later on then eh? So image and illustration quality will be going to the mangas which I won't ever review because then I'll have to get a new blog site.

3. Character Development: I actually forgot the names of the other characters because I read this book a week ago and my memory happens to wipe out old information as soon as it comes across new information, and I hate my stupid brain for it.  Like why brain, why you gotta embarrass me like that. But then again, this is the same brain that writes deaths of a million characters within 4 chapters so I guess I can understand the evil behind it.

Anyways, as I was saying. Character development. It is kind of flat because not a lot happens in the vast expanse of the book. I mean, it does, but nothing to exactly layer on the characters, except perhaps for the leads falling in love. And I don't think I really remember any developments happening much. Just at the end that growth that happens inside of Mina that she is willing to give up the love of her life to be able to save her village. I think that alone is some growth.

4. Couldn't put it down- Ness: On a scale of one to ten, I'd rate it a solid nine. There have been some points where I actually had to put down the book because I did not want to go through it, so I put it down for a bit. Otherwise, the book is really interesting and I don't particularly find any reason to not like it? And I finished it in 3 hours. So quite high on the scale.

5. Intellectual Depth: I don't know what to actually say here. Maybe it should be a point for a book with heavier themes because this is a middle grade book and is really light hearted despite it having a lot of darkness sometimes? It's quite direct and there aren't any double layered meanings behind them so it's hard to actually categorize this point. I just added this thing just so I could actually think about the book and not actually talk about how useless my life is, which is in fact, pretty useless. There I do, doing random shit again.

6. Plot Twists: And seriously, you expect me to NOT talk about this? It's been a while since I actually found good shit to read and has proper plot twists and it makes me feel so happy. Like this book is emotionally shattering and it makes me happy that it is emotionally shattering [I'm a sado-maso, leave me alone]. Like even to the last 40 pages, there is a new plot twist and I'm mentally like, HOW THE FUCK WILL THIS RESOLVE, THERE'S LITERALLY ONLY A FEW PAGES LEFT!! Seriously, the plot twists be really pulling that "surprise motherfucker" card on here.

7. Plot: I am sort of really sorry that this becomes the last point when it was supposed to be the priority but I was so busy trying out this new format it kind of slipped my mind. Before we go ahead, we should establish at this point that I live for mythological retellings. And I love the plot, it has the sacrifice for my own even if it means I die trope, the enemies to lovers AND the soulmate trope. Please, I need more of enemies and soulmates trope. And I love the plot.

OVERALL, A GOOD READ, I want to read more books like this.
