Review: Dark Rise
Your honour, let's be straight about this. Well, kind of not straight about this? [Heh, got that joke?] Well, this book really wasn't on my tbr until someone from the book club recommended it to me. Wish I could remember who did though, I can't exactly remember their name. Or username for that matter, sadge. Maybe I need to get some almonds to get my memory jogging. Yeah, that would be nice.
Dark Rise by C. S. Pacat follows the story of Will and Violet. Will has been on the run with his mother throughout his whole life without knowing the reason. Violet has been living under the shadow of her half brother, hoping to become him someday. What they do not know is that something big brewing in their lives will change forever. The kings and warriors of old reborn in a new world, a war that only one person could stop...or perhaps only one person could start.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 3.5/5, QUITE INTERESTING TO BE HONEST, BUT NOT REALLY ENOUGH.
WHAT DID I FEEL ABOUT THE BOOK'S:
1. Writing Quality: The writing is sort of slow paced in the beginning, which did fit in the mysterious vibes, but as the story progressed, the pace didn't. Which was sort of a turn off for me because you expect a book to be fast paced as it progresses further in the story.
2. Worldbuilding: I have conflicted feelings about the world building. Kind of like I did when I looked into the worldbuilding of Harry Potter. It's kind of incomplete but it kind of fills up the gap inside your mind at the same time. There are a LOT of questionable gaps in the worldbuilding but one might just look over them because the details are not necessary or something. But that kind of irks me and interests me at the same time I guess. To be honest, now that I think about it, I kind of hate Harry Potter now.
3. Character Development: I don't like it, to put it simply. I mean I do like it where Cyrian actually decides to get a backbone, but otherwise no. And I do like the fact that Will's bisexual. I do not understand how the relationship between Katherine and Will develops, I simply do not. I think James and Will are a more plausible story because they have helluva sexual tension between them that needs to be resolved. When Will opens James's manacles, I'm like "JUST FUCK ALREADY". It would have made even more sense if Will ended up with Violet but no, it's freaking Katherine who wouldn't even want to go home without someone to accompany her. SMH. And it's so freaking stereotypical like bruh, what's with the god damned stereotypes?
4. Couldn't put it down- Ness: 6/10 [I am legit exhausted mentally to explain this point right now, leave me the fuck alone]
5. Plot Twists: I kind of like how the story unravels along with the plot twists. The plot isn't really unpredictable, I'll go so far as to say that it IS in fact, really predictable but sometimes, there are these one liners that kind of are really good. And a whole new plot twist is developed through them. That's kind of really nice. Otherwise the book's hella predictable.
6. Plot: I kind of like the plot but it seems like it's repetitive and monotonous. Like after a certain point is just becomes the same thing over and over again. Over explanation is also a thing, like, why in the world do you need to explain so much where it's not needed at all? The lore too, I mean, the main lore that is responsible for the wholeass story is like a kid's story? Like for those two to three year olds who can't even read properly. Also, it's mentioned about the "Blood of The Lady" but you don't even mention the lore of the lady and don't even give details about it. Bruh, seriously, the eff is wrong with you? Like seriously, who tf is the LADY? Other than the fact that she defeated the dark king and was his wife, I KNOW NOTHING. NOTHING.
