Review: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
I think by now everyone knows the hype of this book. Like Instagram is FILLED with praises for this book. Seriously, if it's not Colleen Hoover, it's The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. It's not like I am complaining, your brother here is just spitting fax no printer. Yeah, I stopped calling myself sis, eh. But then this blog is not about my gender crisis. But my crisis when I read.
Written by Taylor Jenkins Reid, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo follows the story of Monique Grant, a journalist at the magazine Vivant, that follows stars. Everyone knows Evelyn Hugo as the biggest actress in the 1950s, where people either wanted to be with her or be her. And now Evelyn Hugo finally agrees to reveal her secrets of all these years, especially her journey of seven husbands solely to Monique Grant. No one knows why, but it's only up to Monique to uncover the mystery that is Evelyn Hugo.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4.8/5, really interesting, I finished it in one sitting.
PROS:
1. I partly thought this book was based on Marilyn Monroe, she's a diva, I love her so much. Then I found out it's based on Elizabeth Taylor which is even better I guess. Though I kind of think Marilyn Monroe looks the part though.
2. Narration: Smooth, easy flowing, mysterious. The narration style of like a short skirt. Long enough to cover everything but short enough to be able to catch attention. There wasn't a moment it felt like I was dragging my eyes over a book just to get over with it/
3. Just the fact that Evelyn Hugo has seven husbands is girlboss. Like lady is just sifting through husbands like it's fucking Tinder and not even giving a single thought about it. Just like "eh, he's a bad husband, swipe left." DAMN. Lady teach me some of your ways.
4. The writing Style: I absolutely LOVE documentaries. I'm a documentary nerd. Especially celeb documentaries. I devour them whole like I devour my books. So yeah, it seemed highly amazing, reading that style. Daisy Jones & The Six had that type of style too if I remember correctly.
5. Plot twist: The one right at the end. No spoilers, or else I'll have a mob after me.
6. Evelyn and Celia's relationship. Seriously, these two go beyond the ENDS of the world and do immense stuff just to stay together. And seriously, Evelyn marrying these various men just to protect Celia is top notch. That's a sign of true love people.
CONS:
1. The thing that irked me was the lack of the name of the person whose POV it was. I mean, one time I'm reading, I'm like, oh this is Evelyn, only to find Evelyn mentioned and realize it was Monique. Like the name thing comes without a warning. That was like a no no for me.
2. I felt like some of it was too long and tedious for me? I don't know, the story went kinda the same and monotonous in some places.
MOST FAVOURITE HUSBAND:
Harry Cameron. Best. Like seriously. I've no words for him. He's literally best friend goals. Like he actually married Evelyn just so her relationship with Celia and his relationship with John could be safe. And they decided to have a family, that was actually very very cute despite me hating kids. Seriously man, a homo man and a bi woman living with their partners while being married is top notch dream. Seriously, I want a man like Harry.
LEAST FAVOURITE HUSBAND:
Don Adler, hands down. Manz is a fucking womanizer, a cheater and deserves to be put in hell. Even if you're the kid of some hotshot celebs, it gives you no right, I repeat, ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT, to abuse your wife. Nah man, that's small peen energy. I ain't living with a man who's so insecure about his small peen that he hits his wife, now that is so wrong. So damn wrong. My S/O better worship me like the goddess I am.
