Review: Lovely War
Because of the goddamned practicals these days from school, I can't even sit down to blog my reviews immediately after finishing my book which means I can't start a new book which freaking puts me back and it makes me angry. Because seriously, usually when I read a book I read it very fast. Frustrating when I can't blog about the book immediately after reading it because the views come fresh.
Lovely War by Julie Berry is a story based during the timeline of the Second World War. Hephaestus has caught his wife Aphrodite with her lover Ares in a hotel room and has decided to present them in the court of Olympus for a trial. However, on Aphrodite's request, Hephaestus agrees to have a makeshift trial in a hotel room, where Aphrodite gives her evidences as to how the goddess of love, cannot feel love.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4.5, I really like how it ended.
PROS:
1. Originality: I did NOT know it was a mythological retelling. It wasn't but the twist with Aphrodite retelling the whole story. Like seriously, who thinks of that? It's not something I have ever seen before.
2. Characters: Though a bit slow in the beginning, the character development really takes up after the second act. Though the really end act was the actual bomb on their developments and then the last chapter, oof! Damn, it's just awesome. It broke me but seriously, DAMN.
3. NO ONE DIES AT THE END.
4. The ending between Aphrodite and Hephaestus please. It was like just so damn unexpected. Like I was so used to Aphrodite hating him in Riordanverse, seeing her fall for him was literally like a fresh development. Seriously, it was so cute.
CONS:
1. Narration: I couldn't help but think that it was a bit monotonous in some places. Considering that different gods were narrating the story, I'd have liked to see some change in the narration style. It would have made more sense.
MOST FAVOURITE CHARACTER:
Colette.
I think that would be because she's suffered so much in her life and yet she allows herself to fall in love with someone. Like seriously, she lost her parents, her beloved brother, cousins and even the boy that she had fallen in love with. Mate, when everyone you love is dead, you're a walking corpse. And when she falls in love with Aubrey and I love that arc.
