Review: Defy The Night
These labels are becoming more and more confusing, mind you. It's becoming so damn hard to categorize these reviews nowadays. And to be honest, let's be real, this blog hasn't been faring that well at all. Not like how it used to do when it started out. Kind of makes me wanna quit the blog but I love it too damn much to let go of it.
Defy The Night by Brigid Kemmerer tells us the story of Tessa Cade, who has been acting as a temporary apothecary, trying to heal the people of her village who haven't been able to buy medicine. A fever has gripped the nation, and the cure is only a certain flower which is available only when you have money. Stealing is a law punishable by death. Tessa tries her best to be able to deliver the medicine to those without, but once she loses her best friend to the royals and gets trapped by them as well, there might be more than a few things to reconsider.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4.3/5, LOVED IT, MWAH.
PROS:
1. Characterization: So, this is the first thing I actually wanted to talk about in this book. Characters. I loved them, loved them all. They're all two faced and there's always a sort of mystery attached to them. Personally, I think Corrick and Harristan's characters were done too well. Two princes whose souls break every time they take a life but they cannot help but kill. That kind of hits home [and no I haven't killed anyone yet, though I wish to sometimes].
2. Trope: Badass female lead. Take my non existent credit card.
3. Writing style: To be honest, it is a little boring in the beginning, with all the info dump and all, but after Wes's death, things get a little more interesting. The narration flows easily and swiftly and then it's quite fast paced right at the end.
4. That plot twist right in the middle though. It made me scream HOLY FUCK right when I was studying. And yes, I read while I study, gives me a lot of mental relief. DO YOU KNOW THE AMOUNT OF STRESS THAT MY SCHOOL IS GIVING ME RIGHT NOW? Jeez, it's torturing my brain.
CONS:
1. Pacing: the pacing is a little slow in my opinion. The beginning was quite hard to get through for me and I had to force my ADHD mind to concentrate. It was quite slow and boring to get through but it picked up in the end. I think it was right after the middle.
MOST FAVOURITE CHARACTER:
Quint my darling, would you please come up to the stage and receive the award as the most favourite character in this book of mine? Because you deserve it. As much as Allisander is a little shit to the royals, Quint has proven to be the most loyal person to them. He is a little shit, but he's not Allisander level little shit. He's a petty little bastard whom we all adore and Quint is a part of it. He even kept Corrick's secret from his brother, which I kind of think not all folks would have done? Anyways, I adore him being such a pish-posh person but then be a little bitch.
LEAST FAVOURITE CHARACTER:
Did anyone else get pissed off by Allisander? Because he pissed me off to a degree that I cannot even describe. Like mate, you're just a fucking Consul and you're challenging the royalty. I mean the guts, and you're being a pompous wuss which is worse. Like ew. I felt like puking every time I saw Allisander.
