Review: Boyfriend Material
Who else is willing to think that the fact that THIS cover, is on a translated version of this book, instead of that hideous official version is an absolute BLASPHEMY? Like seriously, this is how folks are driven away from good books, yaknow. Well, readers would still read it, but you know.
Boyfriend Material , by Alexis Hall deals with the life of Luc O'Donnell, a reluctant celebrity, which comes from being the child of two very famous rock stars that no longer live together and Luc is just the perfect bait for the tabloids to make his life hell. After a row with Cam and at the stage of almost being fired, Luc decides to fake date Oliver Blackwood. Oliver Blackwood is everything Luc wants in a guy + a delicious V-line, but when the fake dating starts to feel a lot like real dating, things might get a bit rocky.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4/5, INTERESTING READ, ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK AT THE END.
PROS:
1. The trope: Okay, hot gays fake dating each other which turns to real dating is a trope that's right up my alley. I'll give my life away for this trope because this trope is the reason I have such high expectations in romance. Someone just fake date me and then make it real. And the slow burn god, I screamed when I saw them kiss.
2. Narration and Humour: Considering that the whole book was written in Luc's POV, I was having a hearty laugh from it. Luc narrates the story in a very lighthearted way that makes the story flow very easily and funny and I kind of think that if it was done in Oliver's perspective, I am damn freaking sure it would have turned out boring. I mean, I love Oliver, but he's too uptight.
3. Characters: I mean, we can divide this again into Luc and Oliver. Luc is basically out there for us to see, he's just as visible as black ink on white paper. He's open and his personality, even though amusing does not offer much exploration as such. As for Oliver, his character is revealed in layers, and it's really kind of fun seeing him unfurl.
4. I love how supportive some of the folks were in the story despite Luc being a total bellend and Oliver's parents being asses.
5. BRITISH ROMANCE, I'm a sucker for British romance.
6. THE PLOT TWIST AT THE END ALMOST GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK.
CONS:
1. The Beginning: The beginning, in my opinion is quite hard to get through. It does make sense considering that Luc is, in fact going through a rocky phase but unless you're willing to give the book a chance, it is hard to get through at first.
2. I didn't quite get to see more of Luc and Oliver falling in love than I expected? It's very, vague-ish sort of thing and it kind of does not explain how Oliver and Luc fall for one another. It's very, obscure. Too grey. Too foggy for my tastes.
