Review: Autoboyography
Do you guys know how abso-freaking-lutely busy school has kept me? Because all I do is fucking study. I haven't been able to even blog for you guys because bloody exams. UGH I wish someone would create a machine to remove the concept of exams from everyone's mind.
Look at this little fishy, almost dead, like me. RIP Claudius though, he passed away a few months back.
Following the story of Tanner, Autoboyography by Christina Lauren, shows us how Tanner takes a class as dared by his best friend autumn. In this class he is assigned to write a book in four months, and four months to Tanner is an eternity. But when the Mormon bishop's son, Sebastian Brother is assigned to help him with his manuscript, Tanner faces an existential crisis, and maybe perhaps falling for the hottest guy in the LDS isn't a good idea.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 3.3/5, AS MUCH AS I WANTED TO ENJOY THIS BOOK, IT'S MEH.
PROS:
1. The Story and Premise: I think it was quite well done. A bisexual guy in a Mormon community who cannot wait to get out of? And him falling for the bishop's son is an even more hilarious and cute story. And then there's Tanner falling IMMEDIATELY in love with him. Love at first sight is such a romantic trope I'll die for it.
2. Representation of the LDS: The representation of the Church of The Latter Day Saints, or often known as the Mormon community, was something I hadn't actually quite seen before. I mean, we do have quite a few Mormons at school, but they actually don't bother to talk with us, and they kind of blew me off when I tried to talk to them. Sadge. I just wanted to talk to them. So anyways, the rep did give me some of the insight into the community I'd not seen before. At first I thought I'd actually explain what LDS is but then again, if you can read this, you can definitely open a new tab on chrome and search them up.
3. Autumn Green, need I say more?
CONS:
1. The Writing Style: Sometimes I felt like the style went from easily flowing to downright walking in black tar. And that kind of made it difficult for me to navigate through the book. And I did feel like that some things were pretty much exaggerated at some point, which in my opinion I felt like could have been lesser? I don't know I just felt like it was over-described at some point.
2. Development: It's kind of hard to keep track of the developments in the book. Sometimes, it feels like I'm kind of missing the main point? The book goes pretty plot driven right in the beginning but then it switches to character driven but then it's just Tanner, Sebastian and their dates and arguments. I do not see a development. Personally, I even wanted to see more of the Mormon culture. It just didn't click in with me.
3. The whole thing was like Tanner writing a book right? I don't see him sitting down with the laptop and ending up writing anything. Like seriously, where's the struggle, where's the crying and mental breakdown? Don't tell me he didn't have it cause that seriously is a myth. A MYTH.
4. The sudden change of POV. I mean, I did see the names mentioned when the narration did switch from first to third POV but it still doesn't sit right by me.
