Review: Six Crimson Cranes

Okay, just stop. Stop, look at this cover. I mean, the other cover's beautiful but have you compared the two? I mean look at that beauty, look at that aesthetic. Whoo, Sweet Mama, that's some good lookin cover, yaknow.

Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim is the story of Shiori, the princess of Kiata, who has a secret. Shiori carries magic within her, something that is forbidden in the kingdom of Kiata. When Shiori jumps in the sacred lake to protect Kiki, her only evidence of magic, she encounters Seryiu,  a dragon, who tells her that her stepmother has magic too. But when Shiori tries to tell the truth of her stepmother's true nature, she not only ends up cursing herself but also her brothers. There is only one way to turn things back to normal, but the task isn't easy for her. Because she cannot speak.

QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4.9/ HOLY FUCK. I NEED THE SECOND BOOK OUT NOW. SEVEN MONTHS IS TOO LONG.

PROS:

1. Okay, this book ended up emotionally SHATTERING ME, like throwing a ceramic vase against a glass case shatter because it's actually freaking connected to the "Blood of The Stars Series"? Like what the effing frick. And I abso-freaking-lutely had loved that duology, because I was so damn gay for Maia. And it just UGH, like TAKE ME, TAKE ME already.

2. Setting: I know a book is good when it's set in China. I mean, all the books that I have come across based in Chinese history are awesome as fuck. I haven't had any complaints from most of them and I'd like to keep it that way. And it felt really cute to see all those pretty festivals and it made me feel awesome because holy mother of Megazod, I LOVE festivals and it's heartwarming. And the romantic scene was chef's kiss.

3. Characterization: Personally, they're cute. And to be honest, the bond between Shiori and her six brothers is pretty awesome too. And I think Shiori is the next heir even though she's the youngest, I don't know it gave off those vibes. And Raikama, her character was the best. She appears evil and vile at first but then the change that she shows right at the end is just mhmm. The bond that is formed in those few moments of her death is just peak mother-daughter moment. Peak.

4. Plot: I don't think that there was much of a plot, considering the story was character driven, but it did seem good. There was a point where the story did go plot driven but I ain't complaining. I loved every minute of it. Though personally, I'd have liked to see Takkan and Shiori kiss, that's all I'm saying.

CONS:

1. I don't know if I should have felt it or not, but it kind of felt like an info dump right in the beginning. I don't know, it's kind of a gut feeling that's like, wait, why is this so long, is this supposed to be so long? And it didn't sit with me quite right I guess. I don't know.

MOST FAVOURITE CHARACTER:

It ain't the brothers, it ain't Takkan, it ain't Megari and it defo ain't Shiori, for those who were thinking.

Its Seryiu [I can't spell his name].

SIKE!

It isn't him either.

It's Kiki. She's THE best character in that whole book. Basically the character who carried the story. I want an alive paper crane who carries messages for me. I want a best friend like that because most of the time I've dealt with snakes, there are a few exceptions where I am blessed to have some folks in my life, but other than that, people are assholes man. Pure assholes. And seriously, a paper bird who can talk to other animals is pretty poggers in itself.

LEAST FAVOURITE CHARACTER:

Zareina. I forgot how her name is spelled but she's a bitch that deserves to die. Just, rip her apart like the Huns did but not fully because we need to keep her alive enough to know she's in pain and then finally rub her with a whole packet of salt and then douse her in turpentine and then burn her alive. She deserves that. She deserves nothing less than that. She's a freaking two faced, whiny-ass bitch who I wanna murder. I wanna commit Sangwoo on her ass. And now I haven't read Killing Stalking, but I found out what that means. I'm a nice arsonist.

OVERALL, A GREAT READ, it was a freaking awesome read, wanna read again.
