Review: Loveless
I am gonna be honest, I am most certainly pleased after reading this book. And I have no qualms about it and I regret putting off reading it for the longest time, really sorry for that, I really am. And it has been on my tbr and glaring until I decided, you know what? Let's do this.
Loveless by Alice Oseman is the story of Georgina Warr. Georgina has a small issue, she has never kissed anyone, never had sex, not even a single crush or sexual attraction, doing things teenager her age did. She thinks that it's just a phase that will go away as soon as she's in university. But when these feelings don't change, she thinks something's wrong with her. But then Pride Soc. introduces her to new words like aromantic, asexual and Georgina can't help but wonder if she's looking for the wrong type of love all this time.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4.5/5, I really enjoyed it, and seriously was into it on a spiritual level.
PROS:
1. Characters: I loved it. It was awesome as eff. I loved it, and I loved every single character out there. Pip, Jason, Rooney, Sunil, aren't one dimensional and I'd really want to live with them at Durham, just to make things interesting. And seriously Pip is a raging lesbian and I want to marry her. Wait, I want to marry Rooney too, AAAAAAAAAAAH I'm torn, I want to marry everyone in that book.
2. Rep: Aroace rep. I think that was the main point of the story. As a demisexual person, which is a part of the asexual spectrum, I actually related to Georgia on so many levels because I felt the same way multiple times. I mean, seriously, I actually connected myself spiritually with Georgia at some point in the book. Asexuality isn't something that is represented much in the media, so I enjoyed it wholeheartedly.
3. Character-driven story: Seriously, I mean, most character stories end up with miserable endings or are just simply miserable to look at. Painful even. But I actually enjoyed this character driven story. There isn't a specific plot I can pin point, it just went along with the flow and to be honest, it flowed really well. Seriously, been a while since I enjoyed something like that.
4. Self discovery and acceptance: I'll make this short because the last time I wrote about it, it was so damn long it could have been a wholeass essay/thesis. So yeah, sexuality, it's really a topic of existential crisis. I mean, exploring yourself and not fitting with what is deemed common can be extremely unnerving and overwhelming. It takes a lot of deep thought as to what you actually want without having someone else's opinion in it and seriously guts to accept it because you're scared.
You're fucking terrified because you feel like people aren't gonna accept you. And let's be honest, people are mean once they realize you're not like them and it fucking sucks. But I think being able to accept it is a great act of bravery and I love the people who own it. And then comes the problem of coming out to people. To be honest, it's just a trial-and-error process. You really just don't know who to trust and who to tell because it's confusing and sometimes you end up hurt. Either way, it's okay to be in denial, or to be in the closet, because it's fine. As long as you accept yourself.
I ended up making this an essay, didn't I? Eh, y'all enjoy my reviews anyways.
CONS:
I don't think there were any problems regarding it, I actually enjoyed the book a lot, it's because I am impressed by very few things so yeah.
MOST FAVOURITE CHARACTER:
For a moment I considered putting Rooney and Pip over here, but then again. I don't think they touched me as this one did. I mean Sunil Jha. He's literally repping us brown aces out there. So yeah this guy's the most interesting character I've seen. He's also an enby, which makes him a thousand times better already. And he agreed to dress up as Velma, that alone was the most hilarious thing ever.
LEAST FAVOURITE CHARACTER:
I don't think there was a character that wasn't to be liked. I pretty much enjoyed them all. Except perhaps for Lloyd even though he's a minor character. Saying asexuality doesn't exist smh. I'll go Sangwoo on him any time for invalidating my fellow aces. Like man, what's your problem? Just mind your own business mate.
