Review: Neon Gods
I'm gonna be honest, I knew this book was gonna have smut. And I know I have said before that I absolutely despise smut. 50 Shades of Grey had scarred me before, you can't blame me. So I went, "okay, you know what I'm gonna get over my trauma of smut". Can't let a good book go to waste.
Neon Gods by Katee Robert follows the story of Persephone Dimitrou, the daughter of Demeter, who has been thrust into the game of politics and power by her mother when Zeus announces their engagement. Zeus already has a reputation of having murdered his three previous wives, and Persephone refuses to be added to the list. When she runs away and crosses the river Styx, she meets Hades. When she sees that Hades hates Zeus as much as she does, Persephone decides to strike a deal that could change the two of them forever.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 3.9/4, It was a really nice read. BUuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I didn't get over my trauma of smut.
PROS:
1. Plot: Okay, amazing plot. I love how everything is done just to spite Zeus and Demeter. Because Zeus deserves to be spit upon no matter what universe he is in. Be it the actual Greek Mythology, or Riordanverse or in this book. He's a little piece of shit. And it was interesting. When Persephone offers herself to Hades.
2. Characterization: I LOVE IT. And to be honest. Persephone being the naughty naughty girl behind that good girl persona is very very hot. Kinda adds a new dimension to her character doesn't it? And then Hermes and Dionysus, both of them, just ICONIC. AND HADES. WHY HE GOTTA BE SO SMEXY AND KIND AND BROODY AND MORALLY GREY? Hello sir, here is my credit card, I'm sold.
3. Setting: Greek mytho reimagine. What more do you need? I mean, I am already a sucker for Greek mythology due to Riordanverse and my love for mythology in itself. And seeing a modern reimagine? Hell to the fuck yes. Also no Underworld and Gods existing in the same city (Olympus)? Hell yeah. I loved the concept. And just, mwah. Yes, I just LOVE IT.
4. Consent: Consent is sexy. Consent is very very sexy. In fact, consent is so sexy just mhmm. Like guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurl, Hell yea. And when Hades asks Persephone for consent in every set of the way it's just so adorable and so beautiful like my heart just goes TAKE ME, TAKE ME YOU HEATHEN. It's just so sexy.
CONS:
1. The only con here is that while I actually enjoyed the book, it didn't help me get over my trauma of smut. I know, I know I should have steeled myself harder, but I don't think I'll ever be able to endure erotica anyways. So yeahhhhh.
MOST FAVOURITE CHARACTER:
Hermes. Hands down her. She is THE MOST FAVOURITE character in the book. She's smart, adorable and quirky that makes me love her so goddamn much. And unlike the other gods and goddesses in the book, she actually takes her time to be Hades's friend and try and want to be Persephone's friend. My gaydar says that she's a bit fruity too, but that's an honest speculation.
Honourable mention: Hades.
LEAST FAVOURITE CHARACTER:
Zeus. I wanted to throttle him. I wanted to decapitate his head and then skewer it with a stick and wave it in front of his weeping mother. Even that would be a mild punishment for him because he disgusts me to that level. I mean, how old would Persephone be? 30 ish? And how old is he? He's a fucking sexagenarian. Old geezer smh. AND HE TRIED TO MURDER HADES WHEN HE WAS JUST A KID, I mean, what kind of God does that? Zeus was a fucking monster in the name of God. So damn glad he died,
Honourable mention: Demeter and Orpheus.
