Review: I Killed Zoe Spanos
You know at times when you need a break from the usual tough stuff that you're reading and yet you're not exactly in the mood for a lightheared Young Adult detox, so I thought, huh, maybe a lighthearted mystery book wouldn't be bad. And I wasn't wrong.
I Killed Zoe Spanos by Kit Frick, covers the story of two teenagers, Martina and Anna. Anna has been recently convicted of murdering Zoe Spanos, a loved girl in Herron Mills. But as Martha investigates into it, it seems that there are many gaps in Anna's confession. Could it be that Anna is lying and the real murderer is out there somewhere?
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4/5, really unexpected ending though.
PROS:
1. Suspense: Seriously, edge of the seat. Not many YA thrillers can maintain the suspense in their books so that's a nice break.
2. Plot: interesting. Even with the change of narration which I absolutely despised, the plot in itself was amazing. It kinda made me love it considering how mysterious everything was.
3. Characterization: This is something I'd love to go over today. Because seriously.
Anna: Anna's memory and flashes were seriously making me think like- whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa? And to be honest it was kinda scaring me like, bro what's gonna happen?
Kaylee: despite being the usual party girl that she has been depicted throughout the book, Kaylee is actually the best friend one could ask for. She's the one who has her best friend's back, even if its for parties.
Max: he disgusts me, cuz no consent is not sexy.
Caden: Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, if I am gonna be honest, he's a dick.
CONS:
1. Time changes: Time and again (heh) I do not enjoy different time lines in the same book. I seriously don't. It's kind of hard to keep track of what's happening in the story and it's often distracting when you're trying to enjoy the book.
2. Multiple POVS: and here I don't mean multiple people POVS. I despise them too but here I meant the use of both the third person narration and first person narration. And God do I hate it with a burning passion. It irked my skin. ESPECIALLY when it switched to first person without actually saying whose POV it is. BREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH.
