Review: House of Cards
Am I petty little shit? Yes. Did I say that I was going to wait for the physical copy of the book? Yes. Am I little shit for not telling the author yet about it? Very much yes. But do I regret it? Absolutely not.
House of Cards written by Sara Ferrando Estarlich, is the story of Alice Rufner, who apparently has finally awaken after a coma. But the problem is that Alice has no memories of her past and yet, she feels something brewing inside her, filling her with questions that no one around her can answer yet.
It's the first book in the trilogy : TALE OF THE GODLESS.
QUICK THOUGHTS AND REVIEW: 4/5, I won't lie, it was good.
PROS:
1. Interesting plotline: I really liked it. I mean, I didn't understand it at first, but it had a mysterious vibe around it which I adored. I really like mysteries and it kinda clicked with me.
2. Character: okay, Alice is the main character, but Shane. He's just too good. I mean, a literal lab rat turned human, THAT kinda slaps like SIR. I love his sass. He might be a little shit at times but then again, who isn't a little shit. Clearly runs away from being a little shit.
3. The feeling of dystopia? I mean, I wouldn't even remotely think it was fantasy, not for one second if I wasn't told before hand. AND I LOVED IT. For real though, misleading someone like that? Amazing.
4. The fact that one of the characters is named Lia. I WILL MENTION IT AS A PRO IF A CHARACTER SHARES MY NAME, OKAY?
5. Dialogue: this was my favourite part. I don't have anything else to say.
6. Easy flowing plotline. There was no drag and that was legit my fav portion. One piece of drag and I would yeet the pdf like Hera yeeted Hephaestus from Mount Olympus and I'm not even remotely joking.
7. Polyamoury: You know if your book has polyamoury in it, I'm sold. Take my money.
CONS:
As much as I don't want to mention these, I'm an honest reviewer.
1. Lack of description: I think this was something that buggered me a lot? I mean, I get that the style might be dialogue but lack of description kinda did not help the book in some ways? I think unless you're a very imaginative person, it's gonna be a trouble.
2. I think the mentioning of the districts kinda gave me the Hunger Games vibes. I mean before the selection portion, it sort of gave me those vibes.
3. Pacing: I think, just before the war scene? The development of events was a bit too fast for my liking. And I think I would have liked to see a bit of training.
4. Lack of moments: Yeah, for those who didn't know, that's an actual thing. Yeah I felt like there weren't any special moments. Kinda felt apathetic you know and sort of robotic. I think I would have liked to see some sibling bonding moments, some Victoria x Gretchen moments, perhaps even some bitterness between the enemies? It could have helped.
